6 Tips for Keeping Long Hair Healthy

We know that the struggle of keeping long hair healthy is real and tips are always appreciated! If you’ve been growing out your hair for what seems like forever, the last thing you want is for it to look dry, damaged and unhealthy. You can make those long locks you worked so hard to get look amazing and healthy by following a few simple tips.

1. Cut it

This may sound counter-intuitive but yes, cut that hair. More accurately, trim the ends regularly. As your hair grows, you can get split ends and breakage. Keeping up with regular trims not only helps your hair grow, but it will also keep it looking full and fabulous!

2. The right tools for the job

You may not realize that a brush is not just a brush. The type of brush can make all the difference in keeping long hair healthy. Opt for a boar bristle or natural fiber brush to keep the hair shaft smooth and minimize breakage. When combing out wet hair, don’t use a brush at all. Instead, use a wide-toothed comb to gently detangle your hair from the bottom up to protect your roots from unnecessary friction.

3. If you must use heat

Always use a heat protecting treatment before you take a hot blow dryer or flat iron to your hair. It’s a great way to protect your hair from heat damage and also helps to prevent frizz.

4. Ditch the towel

This is an old stand-by for folks with curly hair for minimizing frizz. Using a soft microfiber cloth or an old t-shirt is a great way to protect any type of hair from the damage rubbing it with a standard cotton towel can cause.

5. Give it a deep treatment weekly

This one is especially important if you are using heat to style your hair on a regular basis. A deep hydrating mask once or twice a week can really help to replenish moisture and repair damage. You can even mix one up from ingredients in your own kitchen! Mix up a little honey with an egg and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar for a nourishing treatment that will also bring out the shine!

6. Stay a little dirty

Ok, not literally. Resist the urge to over wash your hair. Washing every day can strip your hair of much-needed essential oils. If you’re plagued with oily hair and can’t imagine not washing every day, try a good dry shampoo for the in between wash days.
